GB WhatsApp Update Guide: Move to v18.80, Keep Your Chats

An in-place update takes about five minutes and keeps every chat, photo and voice note exactly where it is. The people who lose data all make the same handful of mistakes — so this guide puts the rules first and the walkthrough second.
The Three Golden Rules of a Safe Update
Rule 1 — Overwrite, never uninstall
Installing the new APK on top of the old one is the update. Android swaps the app and leaves your data alone. Uninstall first, and your local chats are gone — this single mistake causes almost every “the update deleted my messages” story.
Rule 2 — Back up before anything
A local backup (GB Settings → Chats → Backup) takes a minute and turns any disaster into a minor inconvenience. For real insurance, copy the whole GBWhatsApp folder to a PC or SD card too.
Rule 3 — Stay in one build family
Clean updates only work when old and new APKs share a signature. Jumping between different modders' builds triggers “App not installed”. Pick one source line — and update along it.
The Update, Step by Step
- Secure your data. Inside GB WhatsApp, run GB Settings → Chats → Backup, then copy the GBWhatsApp folder from internal storage to your PC, SD card or cloud drive. That folder holds your backups and media — everything needed to rebuild even if the phone dies mid-update. Don't count on Google Drive; mod builds can't restore it.
- See what you're running. Three-dot menu → GB Settings → About shows your current version. Anything below v18.80 means you're due. (On a much older build with an “expired” screen? Jump straight to v18.80 — no intermediate installs needed.)
- Install the new APK over the old one. Grab the file below, tap it, and confirm when Android offers to update the existing application. Do not uninstall anything. A Play Protect warning is normal for mod-signed apps.

When the Update Refuses to Work
“App not installed”
Nine times out of ten this is Rule 3 biting you: the new APK comes from a different build family than your installed copy, so Android refuses the in-place update. With your backup done and the GBWhatsApp folder copied to safety, uninstall the old app, install the new APK, verify your number and restore when prompted — your chats survive because you backed up. The same error shows up when storage is nearly full, so free a few hundred MB first.
“Parse error” while installing
The download was corrupted or truncated. Delete the file and re-download on a stable connection (the real thing is roughly 72 MB). Also confirm the phone runs Android 5.0 or higher.
Stuck on “this version has expired”
Old builds carry a kill-date to push users forward. The way out is exactly the update above: install v18.80 over your current copy. You don't need to install every version in between.
Chats missing after updating
Don't panic and don't reinstall randomly. If your backup ran, GB Settings → Chats → Backup → Restore brings everything back. Worst case, reinstall and restore at the number-verification screen.
How Often Should You Update?
A sensible rhythm is every two to three months, or within a week of a new release — whichever comes first. Two things make waiting expensive: old builds eventually hit their expiry date and lock you out, and the anti-ban layer ages, so outdated copies are where bans concentrate. Checking the changelog once a month is enough to stay ahead.
